Take a two hour drive southeast from Atlanta to drive to the Warner Robins Air Force Base to visit an amazing, 51 acre aviation museum. It’s free. It’s big with four large buildings full of aircraft. It’s beautifully done. Experience history lessons while pulling kids in with airplanes, helicopters, uniforms, weapons, and great educational displays. You won’t be able to see it all in one day, so just start planning on your second trip.
🙋♀️What is it?
The second largest museum in the United States Air Force is is a wonderful outing for all ages – aviation and history. The museum is next to the base and has multiple large buildings to explore. More planes, helicopters, jets, and war history than you will have time to see! While this is a great place for kids, this is by no means a children’s museum. There is more to read than they will have patience for – come as a adult adventure without any regrets.
With four large buildings to explore, you may have to choose where to spend your time. My favorite building for history is the Scott Exhibit Hangar where you can learn about the D-Day invasion, Tuskegee Airmen, and see a deactivated nuclear bomb. The Nugteren Hangar covers Vietnam and Korean war airplanes as well as ambulances and helicopters of that time. Visit the Century of Flight for the the largest planes including a replica early airplane; the second floor also has a small area about space flight and the space station. The Eagle Building has several stories of military history grouped by time period with many uniform, artifacts, and explanatory videos; this building kind of overwhelms me with so much stuff!
